INFOGRAPHIC / DATA VISUALIZATION / 2020 / POLITECNICO OF MILAN / GROUP PROJECT

Since Tor browser was released in 2002, the Dark Web constantly experienced a user growth all over the world. One of the reasons is its architecture that allows anonymity within the internet. The Dark Web is a closed network in itself which requires a special internet protocol. Through Tor, people can access the network and its corresponding websites while they bypass their internet service provider.
The Dark Web is of great interest for criminals, but also for people who live under a suppressive government.
The visualisation illustrates the usage of the Tor protocol by country within four years. The selected countries have a minimum of 0.01‰ users and are ordered according to their democracy index, from the lowest to the highest.
The vertical axis shows the time, representing each day with a color based on the usage of the country. Three different shapes indicate special events, which are politically motivated and could be related to a change on Tor’s usage.
